That Time of the Month
When women start experiencing changes in their physical, physiological and emotional behavior, there is a high likelihood that their menstrual period is just a couple of days away. Namely, there are certain signs and changes, all of which are called the premenstrual syndrome or the PMS. This period, affecting women as it does, alters their capability to concentrate, to be effective at work, to have normal relationships and to feel good about themselves.
However, since hormones are the main culprit behind the PMS, many people confuse or compare symptoms of this syndrome with pregnancy. In fact, there are many similarities with the signs of both PMS and pregnancy. However, there are also many distinctions.
Signs of PMS
Premenstrual syndrome usually goes hand-in-hand with swelling and tenderness affecting the breasts. Moreover, a woman in this period may gain weight easily, get bloated or become prone to water retention. Additionally, abdominal cramps, headaches, joint pain, constant fatigue, skin problems, sleeplessness and many other negative lifestyle changes may take place. Disturbed bowel movements, nipple discharge, desire for salty, sour or sweet food, lack of sex drive and pain in the lower back, all are signs of PMS.
As for the behavior of women in this period, extreme irritability comes first. Women, during PMS, may feel depressed and anxious, being very pessimistic and negative. Mood swings may be quite common, along with proneness to daydreaming, aggressiveness and lack of concentration.
Finally, women in their PMS may not tolerate alcohol well and may suffer from various skin problems such as hives, edema and acne. Sinus problems and throat pain are common as well.
Signs of Pregnancy
First of all, the best sign of pregnancy is a missing period. However, there are several other things which might indicate pregnancy. Breast tenderness and swelling, constant fatigue and implantation bleeding are some of the most commonly perceived signs. You should be on the lookout for morning sickness, since this is one of unique signs of pregnancy, especially when it starts occurring two or eight weeks after the conception. Other distinct symptoms may involve frequent urination, heartburn, darkening of the skin around the nipples, headaches and lower back aches. Mood swings and intolerance of food and smells may appear too, along with abdominal bloating.
Knowing the Difference and Reacting Properly
If you are bothered by PMS, the symptoms are likely to get less prominent once you exercise regularly and reduce your intake of coffee and salty food. Smoking and drinking are also out of the question. Taking medication against PMS is not advisable, since there are numerous side-effects related to these drugs. Thus, for dealing with PMS, choose herbal medications. As for pregnancy, it is best to consult with your doctor, since you need to be very careful, caring for the growing fetus.
Finally, when in doubt regarding any of these states, it is best to seek medical advice.
