Leukaemia is the cancerous disease that affects the bone marrow (the tissue of the inside of bones) and the blood. It is actually the excessive growth and piling up of the blood cells (especially the white blood cells), that can’t be controlled. Leukaemia is also realized as the name for the entire group of the similar conditions and it can be acute or chronic. The acute one is very aggressive and quickly advancing condition, while the chronic type is the leukaemia that gradually leads to death, often because of an infection.

Leukaemia also has the characteristic of being myelogenous or lymphocytic so there are in fact the four major types of this disease.

The children are the mostly affected part of the population and they are likely to develop the leukaemia of the white blood cells in the marrow of bones. The next stage in the development of leukaemia is that those accumulated and functionless cells start to disrupt and damage the normal making of the other blood cells.

That way the common consequence is anemia, which is the decreased level of the red blood cells, and the abnormal leaking of and, consequently, losing of the blood. One of the major problems is that the affected individuals are most prone to get any kind of infection since the leukocytes can’t prevent it any more. This is, because, although there is a considerable amount of the white blood cells, they are degenerated and ineffective.

But, the most important thing that should be mentioned is that the children are almost always affected by the acute leukaemia and, fortunately, the treating of the leukaemia in children has been very successful up till now.

But, unfortunately, the causes are very unpredictable. Although this condition usually depends on the leukaemia gene risk factors, in many cases, this condition has been probably triggered by some factors from outside, such as the mutations of genes which are not passed on through generations.A lot of children developed leukaemia as the consequence of pre or post natal radiation, even of the simple X-ray check.

When it comes to the treatment of this specific kind of acute leukaemia, that is most common in children, it is always based on the chemotherapy. But, this traditional treatment is also combined with a certain combination of medications, which is carefully adapted to each individual.

Anyway, all the elements of the treatment are designed to stop the cancer from spreading and to kill the malignant cells, if possible. When there’s no those cells left, the chemotherapy is prolonged for the period of a few years, as the necessary precaution against the possible reappearance of the disease.

So, the chemotherapy is the best solution, although it involves the well-known negative side-effects, such as the constant need for vomiting, the hair loss, and the other troubles.
