Sore throat is an issue that affects many people during cold seasons. Since it is not a major ailment and in most cases it is not indicative of a serious disease, sore throat can be treated effectively at home, using remedies and ingredients that are already at hand. Some of them actually work very quickly.

What causes sore throat

The most common cause of a sore throat are viruses. They thrive particularly in winter, when the temperature is suitable for them and when people spend more time indoors, where the possibility of contracting the infection is much higher. Viruses are usually transmitted through direct contact or by touching things where the tiny droplets with virus have landed after a sick person has sneezed or coughed. This is why it is very important to wash hands frequently during cold and flu season.

Sore throat can also be caused by bacteria, although bacterial infections are less common that viral ones. Other causes may include air pollution, dry air, voice box irritation, smoking, drinking and eating spicy food.
