Liver Cancer-Introduction
Liver cancer is a type of cancer that starts in the liver. This means that there are malignant hepatic tumors, growths on or in the liver. Although, the cancer might start in the liver, it usually originated from another part of the body. This is called metastasis, and that is why doctors usually call it metastatic cancer.
Liver cancer occurs when liver cells develop mutations in their DNA, which actually provides instructions for every chemical process in the body. DNA mutations cause alterations in these instructions. One result is that cells may begin to grow out of control and eventually form a tumor.
It is not yet known what actually causes liver cancer. Only in a small percentage of cases is the actual cause discovered. However, sometimes it is established that chronic infections with certain hepatitis viruses may be the cause.
There are, however, certain risk factors that may increase one’s risk of getting this disease. These include: diabetes, excessive alcohol consumption, cirrhosis, obesity, chronic infections with hepatitis B virus or hepatitis C virus, etc. It has also been established that older male adults are prone to get liver cancer.
