Canker sores or aphtous sores usually develop on the soft tissue in the mouth. You may have canker sores on the inside of the lips or cheeks, on the tongue or on the base of your gums. This is not the same condition as cold sores and these should not be confused. Cold sores appear on the outer and canker sores on the inner side of the lips. Also, cold sores are contagious and can be passed to others, while canker sores can’t affect anyone else but you.

Patients may feel some tingling and burning before canker sore appear, as well as some irritation and burning while eating, once these appear. Sometimes, skipping a meal is less annoying than enduring the burning and some people rather choose to be hungry than to feel it.

In most cases, canker sores last for a week or two, but some of the remedies may help you to speed up the process or ease the problem.

Salt water and Other Fluids

Salt water is probably the easiest way to get rid of canker sores. Simply combine one tablespoon of salt with a glass of warm water and gargle several times. This remedy should dry canker sores quickly if used every day.

Fruit juices are also found to be helpful for people dealing with canker sores. Try purple grape or cranberry juice to heal canker sores more easily. As recommended, you should drink those juices twice per day.

Milk of magnesia is another helpful remedy for canker sores. Use one part of hydrogen peroxide and one part of water and use this mixture over canker sores. After that, apply liquid milk of magnesia with some cotton swab at least several times every day and your canker sores should be gone in no time.

Alum for Canker Sores

Alum is believed to efficiently work against canker sores. You can find alum in almost any grocery and once you buy it, place on the canker sore. Some people might experience burning sensation, but it should ease the pain very quickly.

Honey and Aloe Vera

Natural remedies such as honey or aloe vera may also be great aids in healing canker sores. Use combination of ¼ of a teaspoon of turmeric powder and 1 teaspoon of honey, mix into paste and apply on the canker sore, 3 or 4 times every day. Freshly squeezed aloe vera juice dabbed over the canker sore several times per day is said to give excellent results.
