Geranium essential oil is derived from the plant Pelargonium odorantissimum, of the Geraniaceae family. This oil has characteristic strong smell with floral aroma that somewhat resembles to mint. This oil is commonly used in aromatherapy to balance the spirit and stabilize emotions. It is also said that this oil stimulates adrenal cortex and balances hormones in the body. It is especially good for stimulation of the lymphatic system. The oil is also beneficial for the skin as it promotes healthy production of sebum, keeps the skin soft and gentle, while promoting the restorative processes and healing of the wounds.
Composition
The essential oil is composed of various chemical compounds such as: Alpha Pinene, Myrcene, Limonene, Menthone, Linalool, Geranyl Acetate, Citronellol, Geraniol and Geranyl Butyrate. There are no side effects associated with this oil. It is completely non-toxic and non-irritant. The oil itself isn’t a sensitizing agent but some people may experience changes in their normal body state. These changes, which may cause sensitivity in some people, are due to the rebalancing the hormonal system. Because of this it is not recommended to use geranium essential oil during pregnancy.
Otherwise, geranium essential oil has fantastic therapeutic properties ant it works equally well as stringent, haemostatic, cicatrisant, cytophylactic, diuretic, deodorant, haemostatic, styptic, tonic, vermifuge, and vulnerary agent.

Geranium oil is commonly used to assist in the treatment of acne, bruises, burns, cuts, dermatitis, eczema, hemorrhoids, lice, as a mosquito repellant, ringworm, ulcers, breast engorgement, edema, poor circulation, sore throat, tonsillitis, PMS, menopausal problems, stress and neuralgia.
As an astringent it is used to induce contractions of the various tissues. This property makes geranium oil beneficial in treatment of weak gums, muscles, intestines, skin, tissues and blood vessels. It may be essential in preventing the falling of the teeth, in gum diseases.
Antibacterial and anti microbial properties of geranium oil, are able to prevent various infections. It is especially efficient when applied on the wounds as it interrupts the development of harmful micro-organisms.
Haemostatic benefits of geranium oil are supporting contractions of blood vessels and stopping the blood flow. Geranium oil may also promote faster coagulation and clotting of the blood.
