Fidgeting disorder is a condition that is much more common in children than in adults. It is manifested as uncontrollable movements that a person is not conscious of.

Causes

The way to notice fidgeting in children is to observe them while eating or learning. Children who suffer from this disorder can do more than one activity at the same time. For example, they can learn and swing with their legs or play with their pencil. Causes for fidgeting in the adults are some underlying mental disorder such as anxiety, tension, and stress. According to doctors, fidgeting in children is an indicator that a child suffering from it is usually hyperactive and intelligent. Scientists believe that, due to the genetics, some people are more liable to develop fidgeting than others. Fidgeting can develop due to the mixed feelings such as over-motivation or over-nervousness in children. Adults can develop it due to boredom and nervousness. Fidgeting can also appear as a consequence of some other condition such as heart distress, dementia and some mental disorders. Addiction and problems in relationship can cause fidgeting as well.

Treatment

One can restrain from fidgeting if he/she is aware of it. There are some techniques that can be used in order to stop this condition. As we have said, fidgeting is an unconscious condition; first we must to become aware of it. After introducing consciousness, we must try and control some of our movements. As stress and anxiety are part of our everyday life, they can result in fidgeting. If we try and make space for a relaxation, we can feel better and fidgeting will disappear over time. Indulge yourself with a hot bath and an afternoon nap. Yoga is also a good way to stop fidgeting, so find time for yoga exercises and practice them everyday. If fidgeting is caused by some problem that you are dealing with, you should try to solve it. Suppressing and piling up of problems inside you often causes fidgeting.

In some cases, fidgeting in children is developed due to some trauma and a proper counseling is required. Not only will the child learn how to deal with the endured trauma, but the fidgeting symptoms will also be reduced. If fidgeting is a reaction to some other health disorder, a doctor's help is necessary. In general, fidgeting doesn’t present serious condition and most often there is no reason to worry. According to psychologists, fidgeting in children is evidence that they are intelligent above average and more active then they are supposed to be.
