Many people worldwide suffer from diabetes. This condition is related to the problems with high levels of the blood sugar or glucose. There are two types of diabetes. Diabetes type 1 is more frequent in young population, while diabetes type 2 usually appears in the population above 40 years of age. However, it is not a rule.

In diabetes type 1, the body, precisely the pancreas, does not secrete enough amounts of the hormone insulin, which regulates the level of the glucose in the blood. On the other hand, in diabetes type 2, there is enough insulin, but the body cells do not respond to it as they should, as if they do not recognize it. It is called insulin intolerance.

Adult onset diabetes mellitus

Many studies concluded that condition is more frequent in men than in women. In the majority of cases, adult onset diabetes mellitus is not insulin dependent and can be maintained under control by appropriate diet and exercise. It is very important to control this disorder in order to avoid certain complications, such as cardiovascular or renal diseases.

Many people do not know that they suffer from this type of diabetes because either the warning signs do not appear at all, or they are mild for years. However, when the symptoms eventually appear, they can be very serious, such as low blood sugar or hypoglycemia, and hyperglycemia or high blood sugar. Low blood sugar or hypoglycemia is a condition that occurs when the amounts of insulin are too high, while the amounts of glucose are too low. An insulin shock usually occurs as a consequence. On the other hand, high blood sugar or hyperglycemia is a condition marked by the too low levels of insulin and too high levels of glucose. A diabetic coma can occur as a consequence.

Early symptoms of adult onset diabetes mellitus

Adult onset diabetes mellitus has its characteristic symptoms that appear in the early stage. One of these symptoms is frequent urination that can lead to dehydration so the person can experience excessive thirst. Since the ocular vascular system may be damaged by this condition, it is usual that the one with diabetes type 2 mellitus has problems with vision, such as blurred vision. Other early signs of adult onset diabetes mellitus are constant feeling of hunger, slow healing of wounds and lethargy, as well as frequent bacterial and fungal infections. Men with this condition can even experience erectile dysfunction.
