Causes of sleep problems

There are many things that may cause these problems but some of the most common causes are stress, a certain physical illness that causes pain or frequent urination, noisy neighbors, a snoring partner, very young children, a bad bed, working shifts and jet leg. Apart from these, there are some other factors that lead to sleeping problems like spicy food, certain medications, alcohol or caffeine-containing beverages. All these things are known to disrupt normal sleeping pattern. In addition to these causes, a person can even experience sleeping problems due to depressive illnesses.

First of all, people who suffer from depression need to know that there are various sleeping problems that they might suffer from. However there are some that occur more often than others. For instance, a person may have problems going to sleep due to having lots of thoughts going through his or her head. Another problem is frequent waking up during the night. A person may also have problems if he or she wakes up early and then cannot go back to sleep. The problem with people who suffer from depression is that even when they do get enough sleep, they still might look and feel tired throughout the day. On the other hand, it is not uncommon for people in depression to sleep too much and to have problems getting out of bed.

How common are sleep problems in depression?

According to certain researches, more than 80% of all people with depression have problems with sleeping. A lot of people wonder whether is it a problem not getting enough sleep and they need to know that it does have certain effects on a person. Sleep is important for several body processes and sleeping is something like re-charging of the batteries. Depressed people tend to dwell on their problems when they do not get enough sleep. A depressed person with sleeping problems is more likely to commit suicide.

How much sleep is enough?

There is no one time that is good for everyone since everybody is different. The needed time for sleeping ranges from 3 to 10 hours. However, experts agree that a person should not sleep less than 5 or 6 hours in order to function properly both at work and home.However, people need not worry too much since there are various things they can do and change in order to get rid of their sleeping problems. For instance, getting into a sleeping routine and sticking to it helps a lot. Physical exercise during the day is also good.
