On the other hand, it is not uncommon for people in depression to sleep too much and to have problems getting out of bed.

A lot of people wonder whether is it a problem not getting enough sleep and they need to know that it does have certain effects on a person. Sleep is important for several body processes and sleeping is something like re-charging of the batteries. Depressed people tend to dwell on their problems when they do not get enough sleep. A depressed person with sleeping problems is more likely to commit suicide.
How much sleep is enough?
There is no one time that is good for everyone since everybody is different. The needed time for sleeping ranges from 3 to 10 hours. However, experts agree that a person should not sleep less than 5 or 6 hours in order to function properly both at work and home.However, people need not worry too much since there are various things they can do and change in order to get rid of their sleeping problems. For instance, getting into a sleeping routine and sticking to it helps a lot. Physical exercise during the day is also good.
