Depression is a mental disorder that can severely affect a person. It does not cause any physical impairment but overwhelms the person with negative emotions leading to lethargy and loss of interest in daily activities. Depression requires treatment and modern medicine uses number synthetic medications to cure this illness. However, drugs can cause many strong side effects and rarely effectively manage depression. On the other hand, Ayurvedic medicine is far more successful in treating depression and at the same time helps to prevent relapse.

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is considered the oldest healing science. Ayurveda is a system of traditional medicine from India that has a holistic approach to health. Ayurvedic Treatment with Herbs for Depression

Ayurveda recommends use of several herbs for treatment of depression. Given below are some of these herbs.

Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri)

Brahmi is a powerful herb for treatment of depression that works by soothing and relaxing the mind. It relieves tension and prevents depression. Brahmi can be found in different forms but it is the most popular in the form of oil. Brahmi oil can be used for head massage to cure and prevent depression. Guggul (Commiphora wightii)

Guggul herb contains specific chemicals that help to improve the nervous coordination thus helping with depression.

Cardamom (Elattaria cardamommum)

Cardamom acts by soothing the nerves due to its odor which can be beneficial in treatment of depression. A depressed person can use cardamom oil or prepare a tea from crushed cardamom.

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)

Ashwagandha herb can eliminate negative thoughts from the mind thus effectively cure depression. The herb also acts like an aphrodisiac which can improve the mind and eliminate depression.

Ayurvedic Recipe for Treatment of Depression

For treatment of depression Ayurveda uses 4 powder mixture prepared of:5 parts Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus)3 parts Brahmi (gotu kola)5 parts Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia)3 parts Jatamansi (Nordostachys jatamansi)

Mix these powders, add ½ cup of water to about ¼ of the mixture and drink it three times a day.

Apart from this, breathing exercises, medication and physical activity in the morning can help patients suffering from depression. Also, depressed individuals should not eat heavy, spicy and pungent foods but should include plenty of fluids, vegetables and lot of fresh fruits in the diet.
