Vaccination against flu is considered an excellent prevention against this viral infection. It is generally suggested to many people especially elderly people and several more groups. By receiving the flu shot a person is suitably protected against the virus and if the disease by any chance develops, the symptoms and signs are much milder than if a person has not been vaccinated. However, flue shots may have certain side effects and one should be familiar with both, positive and negative effects of flu vaccination.

A flue shot contains inactivated viral particles of certain viruses. There are recommendations when it comes to administration of flu shot against seasonal flu and swine flu. The doctor will recommend the vaccine in certain patients while there may be certain contraindications for vaccination and in this case a person must not be administered a flu shot.

Flu Shot Vaccination

There are general recommendations of who is supposed to undergo vaccination. Flu shot should be administered to people over the age of 50, residents of chronic-care facilities and other nursing homes, women in the second and third trimester of pregnancy during the flu season, patients suffering from chronic lung and heart conditions (including children suffering from asthma), children and teenagers on prolonged Aspirin therapy who are at risk for Reye's syndrome after the flu and patients with chronic metabolism diseases such as diabetes, renal dysfunction, hemoglobinopathies and immunocompromized patients.

Flu Shot Side Effects

Even though annual flu shots successfully prevent against infection, they may contain certain ingredients such as mercury, thimerosal, ethylene glycol, formaldehyde, streptomycin, phenol and aluminum which may be responsible for certain side effects.

Some of the most common side effects of flu shot include skin allergies, allergic asthma and associated wheezing, cough, low grade fever, chills, runny nose, headache, muscle/ joint ache, weakness, local reactions (swelling of the skin at the site of injection) and Guillain syndrome. In rare cases a person may experience severe allergic reaction. Even Gullian syndrome is considered an extremely rare side effect.

In order to prevent some of the potential side effects a person must report all the medications he/ she is currently taking. Allergy of any kind must be reported as well. People may not be fully informed and some of the information may be over-exaggerated when it comes to vaccination against flu. So in order to obtain proper and valid information regarding all the benefits and possible side effects of flu shot one is supposed to consult a medical professional who will provide you with all the necessary information related to vaccination.
