When it comes to diabetes, there are the two types, type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is a condition when the pancreas does not produce enough amounts of the hormone insulin, while the type 2 diabetes is a condition when the body is resistant to insulin.

The pancreas is an organ in the human body that manufactures insulin, the hormone regulates the level of the glucose in the blood. In the cases of type 2 diabetes, the pancreas produces enough amounts of insulin, although the body cannot appropriately respond to it because it does not recognize insulin. In such cases, the sugar does not reach the body’s cells and it is necessary to know that the sugar is one of the most important sources of energy for the body.

Insulin role in the body

To sustain the body, we must provide the energy for it and the main source of energy is food. When we eat and drink, the food is disintegrated and dissolute into glucose, which is simple sugar that is carried through the blood flow to the cells, which then use the glucose as the energy so that we can perform our daily tasks. Hormone insulin has the role to regulate the level of sugar in the blood and the pancreas always produce small amount of it. When the level of sugar is increased, then the pancreas produces more insulin and thus, the glucose level falls down. In order to prevent hypoglycemia or low blood sugar, we get the urge to eat sweets, for example. In cases of type 2 diabetes, the cells do not respond to insulin and high blood sugar occurs.

Risk factors for type 2 diabetes

It is proven that certain genes are responsible for the occurrence of type 2 diabetes. Therefore, it can be considered that this condition is typically inherited. Type 2 diabetes is a condition that must be controlled. Healthy diet, healthy lifestyle and proper medications are very helpful and can effectively regulate this condition. Those people who suffer from hypertension or high blood pressure are at high risk to develop type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, those people who have high levels of blood triglyceride are also susceptible to type 2 diabetes.

Diets rich in fats, consummation of alcohol, unhealthy lifestyle and obesity are some of the causes that may lead to the occurrence of this condition, too. This condition typically occurs in adults over 45 years of age, but the fact is that pregnant women with gestational diabetes may also develop diabetes type 2.
