Side Effects of Ovarian Cysts
Ovarian cysts are sacs filled with fluid, surrounded by a thin wall, which develop within the ovary. Ovarian cysts are usually benign growths and are not life-threatening. However, ovarian cysts are associated with side effects that can cause a lot of problems and even interfere with a woman’s fertility. Ovarian cysts typically cause pelvic pain, heavy menstrual bleeding, vaginal bleeding, pain in the breasts and other side effects.
- Infertility treatment - patients treated with gonadotropins or other ovulation induction agents may develop cysts as part of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome.
- Tamoxifen.
- Pregnancy - in pregnancy, ovarian cysts may form in the second trimester when hCG levels peak.
- Hypothyroidism.
- Maternal gonadotropins - the transplacental effects of maternal gonadotropins may lead to the development of fetal ovarian cysts.
- Cigarette smoking.
- Tubal ligation - functional cysts have been associated with tubal ligation sterilizations.
Heavy Bleeding during the Menstruation
After surgical removal of an ovarian cyst women may experience heavy bleeding at the time of menstruation. The bleeding is often unusually heavy after the surgery comparing to the blood flow prior to the surgery. Also, the time between the first menstrual period and surgery may vary from patient to patient. In some women, the first menstruation may occur after a couple of months following the surgical treatment while sometimes it can take even longer. On the other hand, some women may get post-surgical menstrual period after ten days of the first menstruation.
Vaginal Bleeding
Although women in their childbearing age are used to blood flow during menstruation, any abnormality related to this bleeding can cause grave concern. Bleeding that takes place between menstrual periods and abnormally heavy bleeding during a menstruation are often signs of ovarian cysts. However, it is also important to determine the origin and the cause of the bleeding. Source of the bleeding may be the uterus or an organ tissue.
But, this can also be vaginal bleeding which is the most dangerous and requires urgent treatment. Vaginal bleeding that continues after menstruation ends is called uterine bleeding or dysfunctionality and it is caused by ovarian cysts. The cysts usually cause hormonal imbalance resulting in disordered blood flow.
Breast Tenderness
Breast tenderness and pain in the breasts are also signs of ovarian cysts. Woman with a cyst may also experience extra sensitivity in the breasts during sexual intercourse. The pain in the breasts due to ovarian cyst increases with time and should not be ignored as it may lead to further complications and even breast cancer.
Pelvic Pain
Pelvic pain also indicates the presence of ovarian cysts. This pain takes place because the ovaries are positioned in the pelvis. Pelvic pain can be relieved with appropriate medication treatment.
Holistic Approach
Holistic approach is the most effective treatment of ovarian cysts and its side effects. Also, holistic remedies are the only way to eliminate ovarian cysts.
