Backache is the pain which occurs anywhere along the spine. The most frequent location of the backache is in the lower back or lumbar region, since this part of the back bears the weight of the upper body as well as any carried weight. That is also why this part is much more susceptible to twisting and bending than the upper part of the back.

Backache is very common, and according to the statistics, it affects 8 out of 10 people. It can be acute, meaning that it does not have to be serious, but it is sudden and very strong, lasting not longer than a month, and chronic, which means that it may even persist for more than three months, and that it often requires medical attention, because it can be triggered even by the slightest movement. Repeated episodes of acute back pain may cause chronic back pain eventually.

As for the most common causes of backache, they can be numerous. Some of them are infections, either viral of bacterial; inflammations such as arthritis, for example; degenerative diseases such as spinal stenosis, spondylosis, or discogenic diseases; and traumas from accidents such as vertebral fractures, lumbar sprains and injuries of ligaments. Metabolism can also cause backache, as well as scoliosis, Scheuermann’s kyphosis and sacral agenesis, all of them conditions which are typical for the period of adolescence development. Backache may also be congenital and it can also be provoked by tumors.

When it comes to the medications that can be used in treating the backache, the choice usually depends on the type of the backache, as well as on the medical history of the patient and other symptoms. Here is important to bear in mind that backache is nothing else but a symptom of a certain condition. It is not a condition itself. The pain disappears without any special treatment in most of the cases, but when medical attention is required, the medications which are usually prescribed are analgesics and among them paracetamol and Aspirin, as the most frequently used pain killers, and some of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs since they proved to be helpful with mild to moderate pain, fever and inflammation. Ibuprofen and ketoprofen are the most frequently used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines.

It should be mentioned that prevention of backache is very important, even though many people do not take it seriously. Parents should pay particular attention to their children, and a very useful thing they can do in order to help them develop properly, is to direct them to some kind of sport activity, since regular physical activity and exercises help a lot in prevention of later backache.
