Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease
We will focus on the condition called gastroesophageal reflux or GERD. This disease is associated with the digestive system and it is very common all around the world. The acid reflux causes chronic pain and many have felt it. The cause of this condition is the content of the stomach, which comes to the esophagus. This problem needs an adequate treatment since it may lead to some serious complications if treatment is not conducted. Also, infants and adults can suffer from this problem. Pregnant women experience a lot of acid reflux, but acid reflux is a very common problem generally, and all of us suffer from mild case from time to time. There have been many researches done in order to find the exact cause of the GERD, but there have been no results. There are some suspicions about what can cause the disease. One of the culprits is hiatal hernia, which happens when LES, which is connected with GERD, and the upper part of the stomach find themselves above the diaphragm. The acid found rises freely if the LES is not present, which happens when hiatal hernia occurs. This makes way for the GERD. Usually there are no symptoms that accompany hiatal hernia, which is a disease that might target anybody regardless of the age. Children, women and men are attacked by this problem, which is present in 5% to 7% of world population.
Treatments and Drugs
Next we will see which drugs and ways of treatment can help if we are having a problem with GERD or gastro esophagus reflux disease. The stomach acid can be naturalized by the use of drugs such as Tums, Rolaids, Galusil, Mylanta, Maalox and other antacids. The stomach acid will inflict damage on the esophagus, which will be inflamed, and these drugs cannot help with this inflammation. Some side effects, like constipation and diarrhea, can occur due to the use of antacids. The disease may be brought under control by a proper diet, which is not very strict. It includes all vegetables, fish, turkey and other low fat meats. Also, the beard that can be consumed is only the one made from low or non-fat milk. If you consume these foods, you will experience the relief from the symptoms of GERD and they will certainly not make the problem worse. Medications that can be given by a doctor are H2 blockers, which block the stomach acid production, and antacids, like Alka-seltzer, which neutralize the stomach acid.
