GERD stands for gastroesophageal reflex disease and it is actually a very annoying medical condition. It is characterized by reflux of the stomach acids back into the esophagus, and sometimes all the way up to the throat. It should not trigger any worries because it is one of the most common medical conditions, as it affects a large number of people everywhere around the world.

Difference between acid reflux and hearburn

Quite frequently, people tend to think that acid reflux and heartburn are the same medical condition, but they actually are not, simply due to the fact that flowing of the stomach acid back into the mouth cannot be characterized as a symptom of heartburn.

Causes of acid reflux

The most common cause of acid reflux is abnormal functioning of a valve-like muscle called the lower esophageal sphincter. When it gets too loose it allows the passing of the stomach acids back into the esophagus. There are also numerous different types of food related habits which may be held responsible for the occurrence of acid reflux and those include having fatty meals, having large meals, having hot meals, having very spice meals or simply erratic meal times. Other possible causes of acid reflux include obesity, consumption of drugs, consumption of alcohol and smoking.

Symptoms of acid reflux

The most common symptom of acid reflux is discomfort which is triggered when the stomach acid seeps back in the throat. Burning sensations in the throat, irritation in the throat, painful sensations in the abdomen, heartburn, hoarseness, chest pain and difficulties in eating and swallowing are other common symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease. GERD is not a serious medical condition and it can be cured rather easily by using certain treatment methods.

Treatment of acid reflux

The most commonly used treatment methods for all those who suffer from GERD include certain types of medications called antacids. In some cases, several other types of medications and drugs can be used as well. Surgical interventions are sometimes the only solution for those who suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease. One may also try using certain natural types of treatment methods, because they are highly efficient and they are not associated with any side effects at all. One of the best and the most popular natural remedies for acid reflux, besides acid reflux diet, is Aloe Vera. Aloe Vera is very efficient in improving the functioning of the lower esophageal sphincter and preventing the acid reflux from occurring in the first place. It can be used in various forms, but it is preferred to use it in the form of juice when it comes to treatment of GERD.
