Colon hydrotherapy (colonic irrigation) is a form of colon cleansing performed, to remove feces and nonspecific toxins from the colon and the intestinal tract. The procedure is considered highly efficient in maintaining a healthy colon. It also promotes good health in general. Colon hydrotherapy is similar to an enema, the only difference is that colon hydrotherapy flushes a longer section of the gastrointestinal tract.
Benefits and Effects of Colon Hydrotherapy
The intestine may be filled with abuild up of bacteria and waste products, that can be associated with many health problems and illnesses. Some people consider cleansing of the intestine an effective way of enhancing the immune system. This way the body is less susceptible to illnesses. Colon cleansing is also associated with improvement in mental functioning. Still, none of these ideas have been scientifically proven yet.
What are Risks of Colon Hydrotherapy?
The procedure must be performed by a well experienced practitioner. Apart from being quite effective, colon hydrotherapy carries a risk for certain complications which must be taken into consideration prio to undergoing the procedure.
One of the potential complications is electrolyte imbalance. The colon easily absorbs water and in case too much water is applied all the water can be absorbed and lead to electrolyte imbalances. The person may suffer from nausea, vomiting and the excess of water can be excreted in the lungs causing edema. Even the heart's rhythm can be disturbed. Heart failure and coma are two more potential and life-threatening complications of electrolyte imbalance.
Colon hydrotherapy carries another risk; infection. Namely, the problem occurs if the equipment is contaminated with bacteria. The infection is transmitted via the inserted instruments. The best way to prevent this potential complication is to use disposable and sterile equipment, as least parts which are inserted right into the colon.
One more complication of colon hydrotherapy is bowel perforation. It is a severe complication which requires prompt surgical repair.
In people who are already suffering from certain medical conditions colon hydrotherapy may cause worsening of the primary condition. This is why people with medical history of ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis and tumors are not advised to undergo this particular procedure. The restriction also refers to people suffering from internal or severe hemorrhoids, those with heart and kidney disorders and people who have undergone bowel surgery.
