Tension Headache

A tension headache is characterized by a dull pain in the head or a feeling of tension or pressure on the forehead or on the side of the head. It can also be followed by ache in the muscles of the neck or shoulders. This type of headache is quite common and almost anyone experienced it at some point in life. Tension headaches can last for a couple of hours or for a whole week. If the pain is persistent and severe you should seek medical help, but in mild or moderate cases you can treat it at home.

Causes of Tension Headache

Tension headaches are usually caused by stress, anxiety, depression, improper posture or holding the head in one position for a very long time. Other causes of tension headaches may include smoking, drinking too much alcohol or coffee, straining of the eyes, hunger, and fatigue and not getting enough rest. Being in a stuffy room for a long time can also cause headache. Various medications can also cause headache. A tension headache can be a consequence of a disorder or a disease. A common cold, flu or sinus infection include headache as one of the symptoms.


There are a variety of over-the-counter medications which can help you relieve the pain. However, every medication has certain side effects, so it is recommended to consult your doctor before you start taking any medications. If you suffer from frequent headaches you may ask your doctor about the medication which can prevent the pain.

Home Remedies

As soon as you start feeling pain, you should lie down and rest. This is especially important if tension headache was caused by fatigue and inadequate sleep. In some cases a hot shower or cold compressions can help you get rig of headache. If your job requires a lot of typing or if you work with a microscope, you should stretch the muscles in the neck and shoulders from time to time during work. You can also massage the sides or back of your head and neck and shoulder muscles. You can also try some alternative therapies, such as acupuncture, or relaxation therapies, such as aromatherapy, meditation, or yoga. These therapies may be quite helpful if your headache was caused by stress.


Regular physical activity can reduce the risk of headaches and many other disorders. If you have to sit for a long time in an office, try to take short breaks and stretch your muscle. You should also make sure that the room you are in is properly ventilated. Try to avoid stressful situations as much as possible and get plenty of sleep each day.
