Gastrointestinal tract is one of the systems in the human body responsible for the digestive process. There are many disease and disorders that can occur within this tract. Some of them are very serious, while there are also those that are easily curable.

Stomach bleeding ulcer

One of the disorders that can affect the gastrointestinal tract is stomach bleeding ulcer. This ulcer is also called peptic ulcer or peptic ulcer disease. The bleeding stomach ulcer forms in the mucosal lining of the stomach. The duodenum is the starting part of the small intestine. This condition actually occurs in the duodenum, although it is called bleeding stomach ulcer. It is considered that the main cause of the bleeding stomach ulcer, in the majority of the cases at least, is an injury to the gastric mucosal lining. When this happens, the intestinal lining is damaged owing to hydrochloric acid. This acid is the main ingredient of the digestive juices in the stomach.

Symptoms of bleeding stomach ulcer

In most cases, the people with bleeding stomach ulcer have the symptoms that resemble the symptoms characteristic for the upset stomach or the stomach flu. One of the most common symptoms of this condition is the burning sensation in the stomach. This burning sensation can last very long, even four hours. Many people suffering from it tend to mistaken this burning sensation for heartburn.

The bleeding stomach ulcer causes abdominal pain. When the lining of the stomach is perforated, the stomach acids and the undigested foods start to build up in the abdominal cavity. The pain is usually unbearable and aggravates with each movement. Constant and frequent belching usually accompanied by acid reflux disease and abdominal pain may also be among the symptoms of the bleeding stomach ulcer. Bloating, abnormal fullness, nausea and vomiting are also the symptoms of the bleeding stomach ulcer, especially when it occurs at the base of the duodenum. The people with this condition may also gain weight since they tend to ease the stomach by overeating.

Treatment of bleeding stomach ulcer

When this gastrointestinal disorder is caused by the bacteria called H. pylori, antibiotics are usually prescribed by doctors. Furthermore, many doctors also prescribe antihistamines, such as H2 blockers. A surgery may also be necessary when the severe cases of the bleeding stomach ulcer occur. The best way to prevent occurrence of the bleeding stomach ulcer is to avoid excessive consummation of alcohol and cigarettes.
