Most common sleep disorders and their characteristics

Sleep disorder is actually any drastic change in the sleeping pattern and if any of such changes persists and does not go away on its own, it is highly recommended to consult a doctor and see what can be done about it. The fact is that there is a number of sleep disorders and each of them has its own characteristics, which is why it is necessary to set the right diagnosis here as well, and to treat it before it does more harm. Some of the most usual sleep disorders are insomnia, sleep apnea, and narcolepsy. However, restless leg syndrome, jet leg and many more health issues and problems can also be regarded as sleep disorders.

Insomnia is usually a sign of some problem because it rarely occurs without any reason. People who suffer from it simply cannot sleep at night, or they tend to wake up too early, which results in tiredness during the day. Sleep apnea manifests through sleepiness during the day, or tiredness at least, but accompanying symptoms are also snoring, gasping sounds while sleeping and morning headaches. This problem also affects the partner in a way, and not only the person who suffers from it. Narcolepsy is a condition that the people who tend to feel sleepy during the day suffer from. This sleepiness is often relieved by taking short naps, but other accompanying signs of it might also be loss of control over muscles when laughing, for example, as well as sleep paralysis. Restless leg syndrome is also a kind of sleep disorder, even though people might not think so. Discomfort and twitching are usually felt in calves, thighs or feet, and it makes the person unable to fall asleep.

Consequences of sleep disorders

The lack of sleep will result in increased stress and anxiety, people will become easily irritable or even depressed, they will find it difficult to concentrate and focus on what they do, and their immune system will suffer as well, since its strength also depends on sleep. All of this will further affect the work performance of the person in question in a negative way, of course. In cases of children, their grades at school will be affected negatively due to this problem. Intimate relationships are very likely to be affected as well, which means that practically all aspects of the human life will suffer.
