This text provides us with an insight in the recovery after ACL surgery. ACL is a short term for anterior cruciate ligament. ACL is a ligament that is placed just below the knee. The successfulness of the recovery is not the same for every patient, and it demands few courses of treatment. Anterior cruciate ligament surgery is conducted when there are conditions that are caused by sport injuries or arthritis. After the ACL surgery, the recovery can be as long as in the case of a knee replacement.
After the surgery, a period of 6 months is needed for the recovery, so that the bone can reconnect to the graft. With lightsome exercises, after a period of 12 weeks a recovery from ACL surgery is completed.
The first stage lasts from 0 to 2 weeks. The aim of this stage is to stop the swelling that has appeared because of the activity. As the end of this period approaches, the patient slowly starts to practice. First, he starts to practice carrying light weight and then heavy weight. The duration of the second phase is from 2 to 12 weeks. This stage is the most important one, and it is about posture and gain that have to be returned after the surgery. The ultimate goal of this phase is a knee flexion of 130 degrees and walking. In order to fulfill this goal, a patient must do leg presses, mini lunges and other exercises that are typical for this type of recovery. Third stage lasts from 3 to 6 months. Within this period methods that return body`s strength are used. The exercises that are mentioned above can be done in this stage, and after that, sideway jumps and single leg landing can be exercised. Finally, the fourth stage lasts from 6 to 12 months. During this stage, the patient returns to his prior condition. But, in order to determine the strength of knees, tests like Illinois agility test, Zig Zag agility test and general agility test must be done. In order to be defined as a fit person, a patient should have 90% capacity use of the knee and leg. Muscles must also regain their strength. The patient is supposed to have the same mobility in both legs after an ACL recovery.
It is also important to state that the process of recovery can vary, because our bodies are not the same. More about recovery after ACL surgery can be read in the alternatives of knee replacement.
