Antioxidants are substances that protect cells against the influence of free radicals. Foods rich in antioxidants benefit to the whole body. People who are suffering from kidney disease have to eat foods with antioxidant properties.

Red Bell Peppers

Renal diet includes red bell peppers because they are rich in vitamin A, C, B6, folic acid, and fiber. An antioxidant that can be found in this vegetable is lycopene, which is effective in protecting against some types of cancer. It is best to eat them raw in salads or sandwich toppings. If you like, you can bake or roast them as well.

Cabbage

Cabbage belongs to cruciferous vegetables and it is rich in phytochemicals that destroy free radicals. These chemical compounds promote healthy cardiovascular function and protect against cancer. Cabbage is full of vitamin K, C, B6, folic acid and fiber. For renal patients that are on dialysis diet, raw cabbage is recommended. Cabbage can be prepared in various ways and should be used frequently.

Cauliflower is also cruciferous vegetable rich in vitamin C, folate and fiber. Indoles, glucosinolates and thiocynates are compounds found in cauliflower that reduce the effect of toxic substances. This vegetable can be prepared in various ways.

Garlic has plenty of benefits. It can lower cholesterol and boost the immune system. Garlic can be eaten fresh or prepared in meals. It can be taken in tablets for those who don’t like the taste of garlic.

Onions

Onions are rich in flavonoids and antioxidant quercetin. Quercentin shields against cancer and heart diseases. There are many varieties of onions such as white, brown, red and others and can be eaten raw, cooked or fried.

Apples

This fruit is well known for its numerous healthy benefits. They lower cholesterol, relieve constipation, and protect against cancers. You may eat them raw or drink apple juice.

Cranberries

Include cranberries in your renal diet because they protect against bladder infection. Cranberries prevent cancer and heart conditions, and promote gastrointestinal health. Drink cranberry juice or eat cranberry sauce to improve function of your kidneys.

Blueberries

Blueberries are rich source of vitamin C, manganese, fiber and phytonutrients. Blueberries are effective in reducing inflammation and slowing down aging process.

Raspberries

Raspberries are source of vitamin C, folate, manganese, antioxidants and phytonutrient ellagic that neutralizes free radicals. They are good in fighting against cancer.

Cherries

Cherries can prevent heart disease and reduce inflammation if you regularly eat them. They contain antioxidants and phytochemicals.

Red Grapes

Egg Whites

Fish

Olive Oil

Olive oil, especially virgin and extra virgin, is high in antioxidants and oleic acid. If you use it regularly, you will be protected against cancer and heart disease. Olive oil prevents inflammation and oxidation.
