Chronic fatigue syndrome treatment

Doctors have not yet discovered a treatment plan for chronic fatigue syndrome. When a person comes to them complaining about it, the doctors usually use a combination of several treatments in order to help the patient.

Moderating daily activity

When a person is suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome the doctor will in most cases tell him or her to slow down and try not to increase the stress, both physical and psychological. On the other hand, it is not good that a person rests too much because it can make him or her lose strength. That will only make the long-term symptoms worse. A person needs to find a balance. The patient should slowly include exercises into the daily routine. In time and with the help of the physician, a person can do harder exercises.

Cognitive behavior therapy

A lot of doctors recommend this type of treatment for chronic fatigue syndrome as well. This particular therapy focuses on the patient's negative beliefs and behaviors. When they are discovered, with the help of a therapist a person will turn them into positive and healthy beliefs and behaviors.

Treatment of depression

A person who suffers from depression will most likely be prescribed with some medications like tricyclic antidepressants and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. If a person is having troubles with sleeping or is suffering from pain, he or she may be prescribed with certain antidepressants like amitriptyline, desipramine or nortriptyline.

Treatment of existing pain

If a person is experiencing pain a doctor will prescribe him or her with acetaminophen and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like Aspirin and ibuprofen.

Treatment of sleep difficulties

Before prescribing medications a doctor will advise a patient who is having problems with sleep to avoid daytime naps, stick to his or her regular bedtime and avoid consuming caffeine and alcohol.

Treatment of allergy-like symptoms

If a person is suffering from some allergy-like symptom like a runny nose for instance, the care provider may prescribe him or her with antihistamines and decongestants.

Treatment of low blood pressure

In this case, medications like fludrocortisone and atenolol will help.

Treatment for disorders with the nervous system

If a person is experiencing dizziness or severe skin tenderness, the doctor may prescribe him or her with clonazepam. Lorazepam is prescribed when a person is experiencing anxiety.

Apart from these treatments that the doctor will usually prescribe in cases of chronic fatigue symptom, the researchers are working on some experimental therapies that may help with this problem. Studies are being done on Methylphenidate, corticosteroids, some antiviral drugs and cholinesterase inhibitors for instance.
