Another name for bone spurs is osteophytes. They usually appear among mid-aged and aged women and men.
This is a condition in which bony ridges appear in the joints. Bone spur usually appears when a person suffers from arthritis. It disables the freedom to move the joints which may result in severe pain and swelling. The reason for the appearance of bone spurs lies in the attempt of the body to increase the bone area. It is required, because the body weight needs to be distributed evenly over the joint surfaces, when parts of joints are disabled by diseases, such as arthritis. Other than causing the restriction of the movements and causing pains, bone spurs usually indicates other problems, which might need immediate attention.
Bone spurs are generally considered to be a regular part of the aging process. They can also often appear among athletes and people who practice sports, such as jogging, weightlifting, racing and dancing. They may also appear due to obesity.
Bone spurs usually appear in the areas such as hands, shoulders, knees, feet and hips. They can even appear on the spinal bones at the back of the body. If a bone spur damages a nerve, the parts of the body that are attached to it may become numb. The symptoms of a bone spur are a constant feeling of weakness, numbness or tingling in the joints, or there could be severe pain in the legs or arms.
Several efficient and simple home remedies can help to relieve the symptoms and cure the bone spur. Applying a small packet of ice on the bone area about four or five times a day, should relieve the pain. In case this does not work, heating pads should be used. Turmeric (Curcumin) is an efficient home remedy which needs to be taken on an empty stomach three or four times a day, for about six weeks. Also, alternatively soaking feet in hot and cold water, should relieve bone spurs.
Hot packs of flaxseed are to be applied to the affected area.
Practicing yoga, yoga asana or similar mild exercises can cure the bone spur.
Shoes should always be chosen for comfort, and the healed shoes should be made of rubber. Walking barefoot over hard surfaces and floors without wearing shoes or slippers should be avoided. Sports activities should be switched from walking and jogging, to bicycling and swimming.
A well known herbal remedy for bone spur is Linseed oil. It should be applied in the form of warm oil.
Foot massages with ice or hot and cool baths can bring relief to a bone spur. Dimethylsulfoxide helps even with acute bone spurs. Chamomile and Arnica should be used as a bath. Magnesium and calcium help to prevent bone spurs as well.
