Low Sodium Levels

This problem, also known as hyponatremia, can cause dizziness, aggression, confusion and nausea. The proper functioning of the human body depends greatly on this item. This problem happens very rarely, so people are not very interested in learning about this problem, whereas the problem of high levels of sodium is something people are familiar with. Human body has 5% of sodium in cells and organs, 55% in blood plasma, and 40% in bones. Blood also needs to have a certain level of sodium in order to function properly. The water intake can sometimes be excessive and this can lead to dilution of blood and hyponatremia.

Symptoms of Low Sodium Levels

As we have said, this is one of the most important elements in the human body. If the levels are improper, there may be some problems exhibited. It is responsible for the acid level and for maintaining and controlling the body fluids. If the problem with low level of sodium is present, problems like memory loss and focusing troubles are experienced. Nausea, weakness and fatigue are one of the symptoms of hyponatremia, exhibited in the early stage. The levels will continue to drop if the treatment is not conducted. This happens a lot since the symptoms are easy to overlook. Further complications involve dizziness, aggression and confusion, but this problem can also induce coma, seizures and in some cases death.

Low Sodium Levels Causes

The use of diuretic drugs can create this problem. They have this effect since the urine production is elevated and it washes away the sodium. Lasix, Bumex and thiazides are the most commonly used diuretic drugs. As we have said, excess intake of water can create hyponatremia. This effect is created since the bloodstream absorbs the water which dilutes the sodium located in the blood. This rare cause can be found among athletes. Approximately 8 to 10 liters of fluid can be expelled from the body of a human being, because of diarrhea, which can also lead to the problem in question. A lot of sweating can create the problem, which is why it is usually detected among runners and athletes.

Treatment

If the problem is caused by the use of diuretic drugs, the problem should be moderate and it can be eliminated with the reduction of water intake. Sodium solution of 5% is given to patients with more serious problem. If the case is serious, hospital must be visited where the sodium will be administered intravenously. Seeing a doctor is important, especially if you are having some of the symptoms of severe hyponatremia, like muscle twitching or confusion. Remember that avoiding the treatment will lead to some serious consequences to the brain.
