The human body is very complex; many systems and organs comprise it, and each part plays a vital role for the survival. One of the most important systems in the body is circulatory system. The main role of the cardiovascular system is to supply the body cells and tissues with nutrients and oxygen. The oxygen in the bloodstream cannot be transported without the oxygen carrying molecule called hemoglobin. It is found in the red blood cells. Hemoglobin is a metalloprotein whose normal levels in the blood are very important for the proper supply of oxygen.

Hemoglobin test

Hemoglobin test is carried out to measure the level of hemoglobin in the blood when a person experiences certain symptoms, such as shortness of breath or pallor, and many others symptoms. When the level of hemoglobin is low, then there is oxygen deficiency in the blood. Hemoglobin test is quite common and it is done as a part of a complete blood count. It is a routine test and every person should do this test regularly, and thus check the state of the red blood cell. This test is usually done by automated machines that break down the red blood cells in order to measure the released hemoglobin. First cyanomethemoglobin is made out of free hemoglobin and chemical containing cyanide, which binds tightly with the hemoglobin. Then the solution is shined with a light and absorbed light is measured. Thus, the level of hemoglobin is obtained.

Normal hemoglobin levels

The normal range of hemoglobin level in the blood in the newborn babies is between 17 and 22 gm/dl, while in children it is between 11 and 13 gm/dl. In adult men, the normal level of hemoglobin in the blood is from 14 to 18 gm/dl, while in adult women, it can fluctuate from 12 to 16 gm/dl. The normal hemoglobin levels in elderly men are from 12.4 - 14.9 gm/dl. On the other hand, the normal range of the hemoglobin levels in elderly women is between 11.7 and 13.8 gm/dl.

The people who have high levels of hemoglobin in blood usually live at high altitudes. One of the symptoms of this condition is acute dehydration. On the other side, the people with low hemoglobin levels have low count of red blood cells, or they suffer from iron deficiency anemia. These people should treat this condition because the low oxygen in the body can lead to the serious complications.
