The diagnosis is being done in order to find and confirm the underlying eye problem. The doctor will be able to make a preliminary diagnosis based on the look of the eye and some other symptoms that point toward various diseases and conditions. After the preliminary diagnosis is made a person will undergo several tests in order for the preliminary diagnosis to be confirmed. The treatment commences once the cause of the eye problem is diagnosed.

Diagnosis for eye problem

There are a couple of tests that are usually being done in order for the cause of the eye problem to be discovered.

Refraction

Focusing errors are being diagnosed with this test. This test will tell if a person is suffering from nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, presbyopia or some other vision impairment. This test is used in order to figure out a person’s clarity of vision at 20 feet. Along with this test the doctor will also use a snellen chart which will determine a person’s visual acuity. The doctor may even make a person undergo an automated refraction which measures the response of the eye when a beam of light enters it.

Visual field testing

This test is used so that a person’s scope of vision is found. Peripheral vision is also included. In some cases this test is a part of a routing eye testing. In some cases the patient will complain of a peculiar field of vision problem. In that case there will be need for visual field testing to be performed in detail. This test can be done either manually or with the use of a certain device called Amsler grid.

Ophthalmoscopy

Most people already know that an ophthalmoscope is a device that is held in hand and looks like a small flashlight with magnifying lenses. The light is shone straight in the eye so that the doctor will be able to study several eye components like cornea, lens, retina, arteries or optic nerve. Certain side effects like blurred vision for instance can be experienced after this examination.

Electroretinography

This test is performed in order to determine the functionality of photoreceptors. Photoreceptors are light sensing cells in the eye.

Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging

With these tests the doctor will be able to see the detailed computerized images of the internal structure of the eye. These tests are used when there is a possibility of some foreign object being in the eye.
