What kind of medication is Desogen?
Desogen is a type of oral contraceptive pills and estrogen and progestin are the ingredients that it is based on. Its main purpose is to prevent unwanted pregnancy, which it does by stopping ovulation, changing the fluid of the cervix, thus making it harder for the sperm to enter the uterus. Due to the effect of these pills, the lining of the uterus becomes less receptive to an embryo. Besides the fact that it is a very effective method of contraception, which is also relatively easy to use, this particular birth control pill has several other benefits as well. Women who use them will have lighter menstrual bleeding, they will experience less pain during this period, and their periods will also be more regular. On the other side, according to the results of some research studies, women who use Desogen are at lower risk of developing ovarian cancer or cancer of uterus lining.
On the other side, there certainly are some unwanted effects of this oral contraceptive, but the fact is that women tend to experience them rarely, or only at the beginning of the use. Some of those that go away once the body gets used to the medication include nausea, vomiting, bloating, headaches and increased tenderness in breasts, while there are also those that are more serious and require medical attention as soon as possible. Among them are migraines, signs of blood clot in the leg or lung, pain in the chest, or other symptoms that indicate some heart problems, as well as signs of liver damage, allergy and heavy bleeding between the periods.
Can it really be used as a part of the acne treatment?
The fact is that Desogen affects the levels of androgen, which is a hormone that is related to the functioning of the sebaceous glands and production of oil. This means that this medication can control the levels of this hormone and thus the production of sebum, which is the main cause of acne outbreak. However, just as it can be very effective in the treatment of acne, in the same way it can provoke completely the opposite effect and make the problem with acne only worse, because it might not be compatible with the androgen levels in some women.
Even though this medication cannot be acquired without medical prescription, it is necessary to consult the doctor when it comes to its use for this purpose. The fact is that it is not its primary function and no doctor will prescribe it only for this purpose, because there are numerous other products that cannot cause serious side effects and that can be effective in the treatment of acne.
