Antiplatelet drugs are used in medicine for prevention of the blood clots formation. In most situations the formation of platelets is good, because it occurs in a place where you have been injured, but it isn’t desirable in situations where platelets cause blood clots to develop in an already stressed artery, for example in cases of atherosclerosis. If this occurs, antiplatelet drugs can be of help, but firstly let us see what an antiplatelet drug is. Did you know that Aspirin is the most famous antiplatelet drug? But there are many other antiplatelet drugs on the pharmaceutical market and they include Plavix and Ticlid.

When are antiplatelet drugs used?

Patients who suffer from conditions such as coronary heart diseases, heart attacks, chest pain or angina, stroke, and peripheral artery conditions are usually prescribed with antiplatelet drugs, but they are also used after some surgeries such as angioplasty and stent placement, heart bypass surgery, and in patients who suffer from atrial fibrillation.

Antiplatelets are taken after eating, once or twice per day, but people who are allergic to Aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen shouldn’t take these medications. People who suffered or still suffer from some bleeding issues, ulcers or those who intend to undergo a surgery should tell their doctor about it so that he could decide if they are good candidates for antiplatelet pills. Doctor and nobody else should determine the start and the end of taking antiplatelet pills. There are also some medications which, when taken in combination with antiplatelet pills, may cause some serious side effects, so you should inform your doctor about all the medications that you take. If you need to undergo some medical procedure like tooth repairing or emergency treatment, please, inform your doctor about the antiplatelet pills that you are taking.

Some side effects that may appear due to antiplatelet pills include nausea and problems with stomach, rash and irregular bowel movements. It is normal for these side effects to appear when you start taking antiplatelet pills, but it they don’t ease, you should contact your doctor and inform him about the persistence of these side effects. Side effects are more severe in people who suffer from asthma and allergies. If you are trying to conceive, or if you are already pregnant, please do inform your doctor and he will decide if you can take antiplatelet pills, because they may cause some serious complications.
