Introduction

Morning sickness is a term which is used for the occurrence of nausea during the pregnancy. Even though it is called morning sickness it can actually occur during any time of the day or even night. It occurs in most pregnant women, and it usually occurs during the first trimester of pregnancy. In some cases morning sickness may be recurring throughout the entire pregnancy. This condition does not need any treatment but there are numerous different sorts of home remedies which can be of great help in relieving the symptoms. Sipping ginger ale and snacking throughout the day are the ones which are recommended most frequently. Certain severe cases of morning sickness may sometimes occur and they are known under the medical name of hyperemesis gravidarum. These cases of morning sickness require hospitalization and intravenous medicaments and fluids. Certain mild cases of morning sickness may also sometimes be treated with anti nausea medicaments and vitamin B6 supplements. Morning sickness cannot be prevented, but prenatal vitamins taken prior to the conception may be of certain help when it comes to relieving the symptoms.

Lifestyle and home remedies

There are various home remedies and lifestyle changes which can be very helpful in relieving the symptoms of morning sickness. Choosing the food very carefully may be very important. One should go for foods which are low in fat and are easy to digest. Carbohydrates are also highly recommended. Food items which contain ginger and salty food items may also be helpful. Fatty, spicy and greasy foods should be avoided as much as possible. Snacking a lot, especially as soon as possible in the morning is also a good idea. Dry toast and crackers are usually the best option.

Eating several smaller meals is an option which is much better than eating three larger meals. This is all due to the fact that an empty stomach may aggravate the symptoms of nausea. Ingesting plenty of fluids is also highly recommended. Ginger ale and water are the best options when it comes to proper hydration. Sucking on hard candies, ice pops and ice chips may be helpful, too. Various different types of nausea triggers which only worsen the situation need to be avoided at all costs. Getting plenty of fresh air is of utmost importance. There are also different types of alternative medicine which can be helpful in certain cases of morning sickness. Those medicines include acupressure, acupuncture, herbal ginger supplements and hypnosis.
