High protein low carb diet for vegetarians
If a person is a vegetarian and wants to lose weight, a diet high in protein and low in carbohydrates, can be the answer.
Those vegetarians that include dairy products and eggs in their diets will have lots of options. Vegans will not have as many options.
Tomatoes, broccoli, peppers, cucumber, celery and mushrooms are only some of the vegetables and fruits that are adequate for this sort of diet. Things like walnuts, peanuts and coconuts will add more protein and flavor into a meal.
Usually, vegetarians are thin. However, lots of them depend on carbohydrates as the main source of calories and thus gain weight. Experts agree that a diet low in carbohydrates will contribute to weight loss. This will result in better blood sugar and insulin levels as well.
A typical vegetarian diet is pretty low on protein and other really important nutrients. High-carb foods like cereal and beans are the main providers of proteins. If vegetarians decide to go for a low-carbohydrate diet, they should consider taking supplements that may contain calcium, iron and zinc.
Dairy products made from soybeans are a good source of protein for lacto-ovo vegetarians and vegans. Tofu and tempeh, among other soy-made products are excellent in a diet that is low on carbs and high in protein. Not only does soy give enough amino acids and phytochemicals for the general well being, but it is a complete protein. Eggs, for instance, has less than one gram of carbohydrates. Many types of cheese are low in carbohydrates as well. Less than 0.5 grams can be found in only one ounce of cheddar cheese. On the other hand, butter has basically no carbs.
Many experts agree that this type of diet is a good way to lose weight in a short period of time, but, may not be the healthiest way to lose weight, if used too long. It may lead to a bigger risk of heart disease, because it is not balanced.
